1896 MURRAY WADE Drawing OREGON POLITICAL CARTOON - PRESIDENT ULYSSES GRANT old

Description: antique original pen and ink drawing by noted Oregon artist/editorial cartoonist, Murray Lincoln Wade (Oregon/California: 1876-1961) -- wonderful realistic drawing signed by the artist, 'M. Wade, 96' - dated 1896 -- perhaps this was President Ulysses S. Grant though it is not labeled - it may even be the notorious Oregon Governor, Sylvester Pennoyer, who had just completed his second term as Governor in 1895 -- -- printed on medium weight paper -- measures 11 3/8 by 14 1/4 in. -- -- moderate wear: bright/strong drawing - light discoloration wear to the paper especially about the margins with some old moisture staining / a dark blueish stain along one edge -- -- we are currently listing several works from Murray Wade -- -- *from Salem Pioneer Cemetery site: "Born in Salem, OR on Sept. 27, 1876. Wade studied in San Francisco during the 1890s at the Mark Hopkins Institute and received criticism from Wm Keith. He later was a cartoonist for the Oregonian and San Francisco Examiner. His work includes oils and pen & ink sketches of vaudeville, theatrical, and political personalities. Wade died in Salem on March 26, 1961. Exh: Oregon State Fairs, 1894, 1895, 1900 (prizes); SF Newspaper Artists, 1903." In: Oregon Historical Society. AskArt Source: Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940" "Murray Lincoln Wade, whose family was among the earliest settlers in Salem, died in the same house in which he was born. One of the ventures for which Wade was best known was his cartoons of Oregon legislators--a feature for many sessions. He earlier worked as editorial cartoonist for the newspapers in San Francisco and Portland. Wade was publisher of the Ortegon Magazine for some 45 years. For the past 15 years he had written the syndicated "Capitol Parade" for papers around the state. Wade was a former president of Marion County Historical Society. Murray Wade, 85, who died here Saturday night, was known from the time he was a youth for his ability with drawing pens and pencils. Among Wade's most popular features was a series of legislative sketches done over many sessions. His discerning eye and deft touch pictured in caricature literally hundreds of men who guided Oregon's government through the years. One of the Salem native's proudest memories was one getting a letter of recommendation for his cartooning ability from Homer Davenport, the world famous New York cartoonist who once lived in Silverton. Wade worked as an editorial cartoonist on the old San Francisco Post and Examiner and later on the old Portland News and News Telegram. Among his claims to fame were 20,000 sketches of personages of vaudeville, done on newspaper assignment, when that type of entertainment was in its heyday."* -- Free Local pick-up is an option.
