1886 FISHERMAN TINTYPE, HOLDING FISH & ATTACHED NOTE SEPT. 2ND '86, ICONIC IMAGE

Description: Original 1886 dated tintype of a fisherman holding a string of fish. This wonderful & iconic image is made all the better by the fact that it has the original informative note with penciled inscription still attached. The fisherman holding the string of fish looks quite dapper. To the right front of the tintype is attached the original note which says the following "Sea Bass- Pilot Fish- (...?..))- Large Fish- Not Recognized- Caught Sept. 2nd 1886 off Sloop Defiance". We cannot read the name of the fish in the (...?....). We are wondering if the largest of the fish may be some variety of tuna. But, we are not certain. This large & visually powerful tintype measures 5 inches long by 3 7/8 inches wide. The front shows some rust spots & some signs of bubbling. The back has lots of rust & fragments remaining from the original paper backing. The pics clearly show the condition. The reference number for this item is #4081.
