From La Nouvelle GĂ©ographie universelle, la terre et les hommes / The Earth and Its Inhabitants, great work of Elisee Reclus. Khiva, Uzbek KHIWA, also spelled CHIVA, city, south-central Uzbekistan. The city lies west of the Amu Darya (river), on the Palvan Canal. It is bounded on the south by the Karakum Desert and on the northeast by the Kyzylkum Desert. According to archaeological data, the city existed in the 6th-8th century, but it is first mentioned in the 10th century by two Arabian travelers. In the middle of the 16th century, it became the capital of the khanate of Khiva. It was also the capital of the Khorezm People's Soviet Republic, which replaced the khanate in 1920, when the khan was overthrown with the aid of the Red Army. Since its incorporation in Uzbekistan in 1924, Khiva has lost its political importance. Today cotton ginning is the chief industry; but traditional old crafts such as carpet making, embroidery, and wood and stone carving survive. The old walled inner city, the Ichan-Kala, encloses various palaces, mosques, madrasahs (Muslim theological schools), minarets, and mausoleums. Pop. (1991 est.) 41,300.
