(Ref. Nissen ZBI 4014) Franz Sträßle (1817 – 1906) was a German teacher and author. After finishing school, Franz Sträßle graduated as teacher in 1837 at Schwabisch Gmund. He worked at the school for the deaf-mute in Gmund, and in Neckarsulm, and in 1848 he received his first permanent job in Steinbach. In long walks he explored the area, and he led travelers through Comburg, a Benedictine monastery near Schwäbisch Hall. In Steinbach he also met his future wife Catherine Dänzer. They married in 1851, and had nine children: Anna, Carl, Sophie, Maria Kleopha, Sophie Catharina, Franz Otto, Emilie, Helena and Frida - but three died already as infants. The popular teacher was much appreciated as children's and youth writer. In November 1859, he moved with his family to Neckarsulm, where he taught from 1870 as a senior teacher. His writings on instructional design were recognized, he led the "Female Continuation School", was active as a conductor of the Catholic church choir, and in the parish. In 1888 the city of Neckarsulm awarded Franz Sträßle its first honorary citizenship. In addition, the newly retired educator received the Medal of Merit of the Württemberg Order of the Crown. Contemporaries appreciated Franz Sträßle as modest, conscientious and amiable man whose humorous and open nature witty man made a popular interlocutor. On October 21, 1906 Franz Sträßle died at the age of 89 years. SIZE: approx. 6,29'' x 9,64''/ ca. 16,5cm x 24,5 cm QUALITY: The condition of the plate is very good (see scan).
