Description: Soda fountain ad 1871 This is a great full-page advertisement for a vintage soda fountain dispenser. It measures 9.5 x 12 inches in size. The ad is printed on fragile paper with a bit of wrinkling and a few very small age spots (see photos), but the page is still in excellent condition. It appeared in an 1871 issue of a rare weekly publication, The Boston Journal of Science. It is over 150 years old The ad features two attractive woodcut illustrations engraved by Howland of New York City, showing two varieties of the Arctic Soda Apparatus. These were substantial machinesbeautifully ornate fountain dispensers manufactured by James Tuft of Bowker Street in Boston, and featuring decorative statuary on top. Each dispenser has ten knobs which are labelled in tiny type with the drink ingredients a typical soda jerk would squirt out the device's faucets while making sodas. Most are illegible, but with a magnifying glass I can make out the flavors of Cream, Vanilla, Lemon, and Ginger. The ad's headlines state: THE ARCTIC SODA APPARATUS. Acknowledged by the Trade to be the Best Apparatus in the World. The text accompanying the illustrations consists of dozens of glowing short testimonials for the wonderful Arctic dispenser, from the proprietors of soda fountains all around America. The comments include the customers names and towns, with praise such as this: The only apparatus I ever examined of handled upon which I could suggest no improvement. Working during the hot season under the severest pressure, it has been all we could desire, making the coldest and best Soda. Harrison & Holman, Davenport Iowa. Have sold 11,000 glasses in a town of 4,000 inhabitants, with seven Soda Fountains and six Beer Saloons. Geo. Black, Canton, Ill. My sales exceed those of former years, although I never had competition until this season, when I had seven fountains to go against. Geo. Bechel, Defiance, O. We sold as much Soda as all the rest together.Rowley & Co., Topeka, Kansas. . . . many of my customers walk four to six squares, passing other fountsin, to drink from the Arctic. G.W. Harbin, Waterloo, Iowa. We had little hope of success when we ordered our apparatus, but having selected the Arctic, our fears are dispelled. We drew over six hundred glasses the first day. Kellogg & Smith, Kewanee, Ill. The ease and simplicity with which the large and small stream from Draft Tube is worked is alone sufficient to prove its superiority over any other now in use. Sales of Soda increased fourfold. I attribute it to the excellence and neatness of your Fountain, and to my following the formula given in your Book of Directions for manufacturing syrups, etc. J. G. Forman, Lynn, Mass. With twenty years' experience in using four or five different kinds of Soda apparatus, I have no hesitation in pronouncing the Arctic the best. C. F. G. Collins, Beloit, Wis. The ease with which a fine or a full stream can be drawn with one turn of the wrist, makes it the best thing out. Utley & Jenne, Sterling, Ill. Have drawn Soda from almost every apparatus made. Am satisfied that the Arctic is the best in use. Have used one third less ice than heretofore, and some complained that the Soda was too cold. Have never spent five minutes in fixing anything out of order. Putnam, Ohio. The ad concludes by noting at the bottom that: TUFTS' IMPROVED GENERATOR, WITH PATENT SAFETY VALVE, Disarms Danger, Insures Safety, and Renders Accidents Impossible. _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
