Description: **THE MYSTERY HAS BEEN SOLVED!! A VERY KIND FELLOW EBAYER HAS CONTACTED ME WITH THE TRUE MEANING OF THE WORD "HORSEHEADS" AS IT RELATES TO THIS CDV!! I AM MOST GRATEFUL!! PLEASE SEE REVISED LISTING BELOW** AUTHENTIC Antique 1870's Era PHOTO PHOTOGRAPH CARTE DE VISITE CDV From the Early To Mid Period of the Genre Of a GIRL IN A BLACK DRESS Taken By A PHOTOGRAPHER IN HORSEHEADS, NEW YORK NY BY THE NAME OF P. T. WARD. This is a rather SMALL VILLAGE in New York state WITH A VERY UNUSUAL NAME AND AN EVEN MORE UNUSUAL HISTORY BEHIND IT. THE NAME WAS SETTLED UPON BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER OF BLEACHED SKULLS OF PACK HORSES LEFT BEHIND BY THE SULLIVAN EXPEDITION WHICH WERE LATER ARRANGED BY THE IROQUIOS TRIBE TO SCARE THE AMERICANS FROM RETURNING. FASCINATING!! And it makes a LOT more sense than my previous theory!! LOL!! A not so funny thing is this could be a RARE PHOTO OF A CHILD IN MOURNING - WEARNING THE CLOTHING TRADITIONAL FOR THE ERA WHEN AN ADULT WAS IN MOURNING. Very sad to think that she may have most likely lost her father. This could be have been from natural causes but could also be due to the ongoing wars with the Native Americans. Or, possibly, an old Civil War wound that he finally succumbed to. In terms of CONDITION, there are some black smudged areas along the left side of the photo (likely dirt as I do NOT smell any mold or musty odor) and a tiny tear in the paper in the upper left corner (barely visible). On the back, you can see a square area of adhesive residue (likely where a price sticker or label once was)(see photo). Otherwise, the photo is in EXCELLENT CONDITION CONSIDERING IT IS OVER 100 YEARS OLD!! In terms of COLOR, the photo mainly consists BLACK AND GREY TONES. Photo frame has curved edges and a simple, red line border. Also, there are very little in the way of studio props (all I can see is one arm of a fringed velvet like chair - although it may just be a prop to look like a chair is there). The photo size is approximately 3.5" x 2". IF YOU LIKE PHOTOS WITH A UNIQUE STORY SURROUNDING THEM (IN THIS CASE THE DERIVATION OF THE SMALL VILLAGE'S NAME WHERE THE PHOTO STUDIO WAS LOCATED), THEN THIS IS THE PHOTO FOR YOU. DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS GREAT ANTIQUE PHOTO AND THE OBVIOUS CHANGES IN PHOTOGRAPHY AS WE NOW KNOW IT THAT ARE EVIDENT AND DOCUMENTED IN IT. BEING OFFERED AT A VERY LOW STARTING BID!! Will be shipped via USPS First Class 3 day mail. I have carefully wrapped the photo between 2 pieces of cardboard and have bundled it in bubble wrap. **PHOTO FITS SNUGLY IN ITS PADDED POLY MAILER - PLEASE USE CARE WHEN REMOVING SO AS NOT TO BEND IT. **Please ask questions before bidding and let the photos guide you as well. I was a long time seller on eBay some 15 years ago with 100% positive feedback and once again have 100% positive feedback. Bid with confidence! Thanks for looking!!
