Description: Original late 19th century circa 1870's-1890's or so wood carved toy whimsey. This hand carved wood toy folk art whimsey came out of a collection from an estate in Chester County, Pennsylvania. This hand carved whimsey was made by a skilled folk art carver. We do not know where this was carved. But, we feel that it was probably carved in Pennsylvania by one of the many Germans & Russians, influenced by their European folk carving heritage, who migrated from Europe to Pennsylvania. The carving shows considerable patina & toning to the wood from in period play use & natural age. The ears of the dog have a tiny bit of wood worn off. This piece exhibits rich brownish natural tones of patina. The length is 7 3/8 inches and the height is 3 5/8 inches. The weight is 2.2 ounces. The paint surface is dry & crusty & has a very pleasing patina. This is entirely original in all respects & has never been broken, never been touched up, & never been repaired. This even retains what appears to be the original string. When the wooden plunger is pushed in the man on skis goes forward as the dog moves back toward the man. As the plunger is released the dog goes forward & the man goes backward. The toy is in sound operational condition. We have left this carving exactly as we found it & have not dusted or cleaned it in any way. This has just the right kind of untampered crusty look we like to find on original antique folk art wood carvings.
