Description: First American edition of John Stuart Mill’s theories on the equality of the sexes. The ideas he expounded were the result of his collaboration with his wife, Harriet Taylor Mill who had passed away in 1856. While the idea of women as equals to men was not popular at the time, many of Mill’s ideas were formative in the cause of woman’s suffrage. This copy is in good condition with the bookplate of Henry Ward Beecher inside the front (name written in ink with “82 Columbia St/Brooklyn NY” printed below). Book is very clean; looks unread almost; small occasional spot and paper discoloration due to age. Some penciling inside front as well as on the verso of the title page (“first edition 1869). Otherwise very clean with a tide mark at the top of all pages and 6 page catalog of Lippincott’s offerings at the time of publication. Very Good Condition: small 8vo: dark green pebbled publisher’s boards with gilt lettering on spine: scuffs and small spots on front: chipped at rear hinge and loss at tail of spine with fraying of materials: bent corners: bookplate of H.W.
