From Wikipedia: William Taylor Adams (July 30, 1822 – March 27, 1897), pseudonym Oliver Optic, was an academic, author, and a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Adams wrote well over 100 books in total, most of them for a boy audience, and the majority of these in series of four to six volumes published under a pseudonym. Though "Oliver Optic" was the pseudonym he used most, his work also appeared under the bylines "Irving Brown," "Clingham Hunter, M.D.," and "Old Stager." Like many children's authors of his day, he was additionally an editor, and many of his works first appeared in Oliver Optic's Magazine. Adams' writing was criticized by Louisa May Alcott, among others. Alcott used her story Eight Cousins to deplore Adams' use of slang, his cast of bootblacks and newsboys, and his stories of police courts and saloons. Adams responded in kind, pointing out Alcott's own use of slang and improbable plot twists. DESCRIPTION: 296 pages 6 7/8 x 4 1/2 inches hardcover CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in very good condition. The green cloth hardcover is lightly spotted, but is cleaner than most. The gilt on the spine is still bright. The spine ends and corners show light wear. The book is slightly cocked or slanted at the spine. The front hinge is cracked open but still holding well. The second blank endpaper has an inked signature. The endpapers and text pages are clean of pen and pencil markings, foxing and smudges, but the last few pages show foxing. The paper shows average age toning for this book. The binding is strong—no torn or loose pages. From Preface: Agreeably to the promise made in the preface of "Little by Little, " the author presents the following story to his young lady friends, though he confidently expects it will prove as acceptable to the embryo "lords of creation" as to those for whom it was more especially written. The girls will find that Bertha Grant is not only a very good girl, but that her life is animated by a lofty purpose, which all may have, though they fail to achieve the visible triumphs that rewarded the exertions of the heroine of "Rich and Humble." The boys will find that Richard Grant was not always a good boy, because his life was not animated by a lofty purpose; but the author hopes, in another volume, to present him in a higher moral aspect, and more worthy the imitation of those who, like him, have wandered from the true path.
