Lith., Philadelphia, 1866 (published) Large folding General Land Office map of Washington Territory in hand-color outline, dated July 15, 1865. Map size: 22 3/4 x 30 inches (neatlines) on sheet 24 3/4 x 32 1/4 inches. One of the rarer Washington Territory GLO maps and the first in the GLO maps series to employ color. Dated October 2, 1866. Wheat 1130, Transmississippi West, who devotes and entire half page of description to the map. Of particular interest, Wheat writes, “…we note such features of the map as ‘Lead & Silver Ledge’ on the eastern slopes of Mount Ranier, and ‘Gold Mines’ northeast of Lake Chelan, on the Similkameen, on the Columbia between Priest Rapids and White Bluffs, near the mouth of Spokane River, near the mouth of Clark Fork, and on the Snake opposite Lewiston.” The map also shows U. S. Reservations, roads and trails, the North Pacific Railroad route, proposed railroads, coal lands, gold mines, lead and silver and coal oil. Topography is displayed in hachure relief. Condition: Toning along fold lines as usually found with extensive repairs on verso using clear 3M conservation tape applied by a previous owner. There are a couple of tiny areas of loss at fold intersections, one on the blank field on the Olympic Peninsular, and the other at the mouth of the Columbia River. A couple small toning spots are mentioned for accuracy.
