Description: 1865 Nickel Three Cents, of the first year of this new composition concept, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by NGC as Choice Almost Uncirculated, AU-58. This was part of the U.S. Treasury's introduced answers to missing and hoarded coinage, from small cents to double eagles, that vanished from circulation as citizens awaited the Civil War's outcome and avoided losing money to discounted paper currency. This was also the first U.S. coin of the composition 75% copper and 25% nickel, to create a metal alloy valuable enough for trust as three cents but not too valuable (as they found out with the concurrently minted 3c silver "trime" being so small). Later, by the 1870s, the mission of this coin and the 2 cents bronze were nearing completion as the Mint caught up to the coinage needs of the Eastern U.S. and consumers would get picky about what coins they preferred to use. But that would be in the future; in 1865 and for a little afterwards, this was gladly received and circulated. This one made available for you was circulated, but at AU-58, not much before it was put into safekeeping and then collections. It is a Civil War-era issue, encapsulated for you (in an also-collectible, historical, old-time NGC slab) to enjoy its displayed designs and history. Enjoy considering.
