Description: Here is an original proof state 1863 Gettysburg Birds Eye View Map by John Bachelder, published by Endicott. Note the marking of "Proof" on the bottom left. Hand colored for additional detail.Darkening of the paper, normal with age, especially with a piece that has been displayed.Measurements of the map image are approximately 21" x 36". Measure of the entire piece is approximately 39.5" x 27". This is one of the largest dimensions of this map I have been able to find while researching it. Nice wide margins for framing.Text underneath the map reads "I am perfectly satisfied with the accuracy with which the topography is delineated and the position of the troops laid down. Geo. C. Meade"There are different versions of this map published. This one with the word "Proof" on it, and being colored, is a more rare version from my research.Unfortunately my photos don't do this map justice in regards to the level of detail and artistry that Bachelder put into it. I tried to focus on making sure you were aware of the condition issues, and eBay only allows so many photos. Tears and parts missing around the edges. Particularly from the left edge center there is a 10" tear, a 6" tear from the bottom edge near the left corner, and a long curving tear starting at the middle of the right edge. Some missing chunks around the edges. Some discoloration spots. Handle this with care. You may want to consider having it professionally restored, or, as I would, frame it and display it for what it is... a detailed record of the battle, originally purchased in 1863 and treasured by a family long enough to make it to 2024! I found this piece with it's original hand made wooden frame also from the same time period, though it was no longer in the frame. I'm sure it was displayed proudly in a house for many years before finding its way to me, and ultimately, to be loved by you. Frame not included but available for purchase if you want to reunite them. Some information I found on the internet:"The view was published in late 1863, within months of the events depicted, and marked the beginning of John Bachelder’s three-decade career documenting and depicting the battle in prose, maps and prints. Here he depicts the battlefield in tremendous detail as seen from an imaginary point above and to the west, using shading to indicate the topography and showing roads, lanes, wooded areas, the boundaries of fields, &c. By assigning different colors to Union and Confederate forces for each day of the battle, he is able to condense three days of action into a single image while enabling the viewer to follow the overall sequence of events, if not the details of the many individual encounters. The margins bear legends, a plan of the Gettysburg National Cemetery and endorsements of Union Commander George Meade and other officials attesting to the accuracy of Bachelder’s work.John Bachelder (1825-1894) was an American painter, photographer and historian. Within days of the battle he traveled to Gettysburg, where he spent months traversing the field, making sketches, and interviewing participants and witnesses. Intellectually engaged by the challenge of reconstructing the complex events and deeply committed to honoring the sacrifices of those who fought there, he spent the next 30 years researching the battle down to its most minute details. He won wide acclaim for the thoroughness and fair-mindedness of his work, including the endorsements of dozens of Union as well as Confederate officers, and was later named Superintendent of Tablets and Legends for the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association."Note this will be shipped flat and safely and securely packaged.
