Description: This is a scarce copy of "The Bytal-Pacheesee - or, The Twenty Five Tales of a Demon" reprinted from the new edition of Eshwar Chandra Vidyasagar. 1860 2nd edition (stated); W. Nassau Lees / The Sanskrit Press; Calcutta, India. The Preface by Vidyasagar is written in English; the remaining pages are written in "Hindoostanee" (or, Hindee/Hindi). From the Preface: "The Bytal Pacheesee is a Collection of Legendary Stories relating to that celebrated character in Hindu Annals Raja Vikramaditya. The work contains no traces of art or genius in its composition; but on the contrary exhibits those clumsy attempts at the wonderful, sometimes bordering on childishness, which are so general in the Legends of a dark age. The original of these tales is to be found in the Kathasaritsagara, an ancient and voluminous Collection of Tales and Legends in Sanskrit verse, by Somadeva Bhatta, under the title of Betalapanchavinsatika."
