Description: Up for sale is this EARLY Rare ORIGINAL [NOT a repro/reprint] Hand Tinted Albumen Stereoview by (unknown, but see below) titled: Souvenirs De Charbourg ~ Aout 1858 ~ No. 4 Vue generale de Cherbourg ~ prise du fort du roule. (Approximate English translation of title: Souvenir of Charbourg ~ August 1858 ~ No. 4 General view of Cherbourg taken from Fort Du Roule). This stereoview shows Cherbourg, France as viewed from the Fort Du Roule and was taken in August 1858. This would make an OUTSTANDING addition to ANY early stereoview, French, Cityscape, European Royalty, or transportation collection. From August 4-8th, 1858 several historically important events in French / English history occurred at Cherbourg, France. Most importantly, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert arrived on their Royal Yacht (along with a large escort of ships) and were welcomed by Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie. The three main reasons for this get together were:#1. The inauguration of train / railroad service from Cherbourg to Paris.#2. The opening of the second Basin -- the Napoleon III basin -- at Cherbourg Naval Base.#3. The inauguration of the Napoleon equestrian statue by Armand de Veel.Actually Queen Victoria & Prince Albert left before the inauguration of the statue. Partly because they were not prepared to stay 4 days and partly because of Queen Victoria's perception that the French naval fleet was superior to the English fleet. In fact, after arriving back in England, Queen Victoria wrote a strong letter to the Prime Minister Lord Derby criticizing the state of the English Navy. Obviously quite the opposite effect that Napoleon III expected to have from inviting them!!! Front TOP edge says: Souvenirs de Cherbourgh ~ Front BOTTOM edge says: Aout 1858 (August 1858). ORIGINAL Paper Label on Front RIGHT edge says: No. 4 Vue generale de Cherbourg ~ prise du fort roule. BACK of stereoview has no information. Stereoview is standard sized (approximately 3 1/2" height x 7" length). I consider it RARE because I was unable to find ANY prior sales of this image on eBay. Over the last 15 years, I could only find 6 prior sales of ANY stereoview from this series (Souvenir de Cherbourg, 1858). Stereoview has NO markings as to WHO photographed / published it. I did notice that there are ship photographs of this event taken by Gustave Le Gray who is considered the preeminent French photographer of the time. I even found a couple stereoviews from 1857 of a French military base that the seller stated were taken by him, but whether the stereoview in this listing is by him or some other unknown photographer I can't say. Please enlighten me if you know more!!! Stereoview will be placed in an archival stereoview sleeve, securely packaged, and S&H includes insurance.
