Description: LEGACY AMERICANA No. 20658 ✮ Martin Van Buren: Classic SOBER SECOND THOUGHTS copper medalet (MVB 1840-6)Medalet promoting Martin Van Buren for president, 1840. Brass. DeWitt MVB 1840-6. Holed for suspension. OBV: Bust of Van Buren to left; inscription around, THE SOBER SECOND THOUGHTS OF THE PEOPLE ARE O.K. REV: Safe surmounted by eagle with scroll in beak inscribed JUSTICE EQUALITY; inscription around, THE INDEPENDENT SUB-TREASURY, THE CHOICE OF THE PEOPLE.Now so commonly used its meaning is universal, the expression "O.K." originally referred to Martin Van Buren, a.k.a. "Old Kinderhook" (he was born in Kinderhook, NY). It may, in fact, owe much of its subsequent coinage to a malapropism of the slogan on this campaign token, when is essentially saying, "Having flirted with another candidate, the citizen of sober judgement votes to sustain the President." Whatever his linguistic legacy, Van Buren lost in a landslide to William Henry Harrison, due in large part to a severe economic recession during his single term in office.Choice example and increasingly hard to come by.SIZE: 29 mmASSURED AUTHENTICITYNo reproductions.
