He was also the younger brother of Horace Vernet It is signed lower right, as well as dated - 1833 The painting depicts one of the artist's specialties - a horseman and a peasant woman oversee the watering of cattle in a continuous pastoral landscape, with a thatched chalet on the right Done in oils on a wooden (Mahogony or dark stained oak) board, mounted in it's original period gold gilt carved Empire frameMarvel at the photos below, an excellent piece of art by one of 19th century France's most prominent landscape paintersHe was also known for his love of horses. A few days before his death in Paris he was seen racing. Horses were often his major subjects as evident in the painting at bar, where the rider occupies a central place in the pastoral composition There is a very old paper sheet on the back of the panel with the Vernet's artist family tree, dates and thorough explanationThis painting was purchased in Paris back in the 70's by the then US Consul General in France and brought to the USA at the end of his mandate. Family descendants consigned it to a local auction house, from where we obtained it a couple of years ago. As far as our knowledge spans, he was knowledgeable about art and spent a good sum of money for it. Back in the early 80's it was apprised for more than $12,000, here in US Measurements: Approx. 21" x 18.25" framed; 15.5" x 12.5" - the wooden board Condition: Very Good overall. Please, see photos. All original, including the frame. Some very minor spots of mispaint and surface crackelure commensurate with age. May use cleaning in order to brighten the original colors, but not essential. The frame is all intact with only age related signs of wear on the gilt, mostly noticeable on the convex surfaces Please e-mail us for additional photos or information that can give you a better idea about this beautiful piece We Will Combine Shipping When Possible For Your Convenience!
