Johann Arndt (or Arnd; 1555 - 1621) was a German Lutheran theologian who wrote several influential books of devotional Christianity. Although reflective of the period of Lutheran Orthodoxy, he is seen as a forerunner of Pietism, a movement within Lutheranism that gained strength in the late 17th century. Arndt's fame rests on his writings, which were mainly of a mystical and devotional kind, and were inspired by St. Bernard, Johannes Tauler, and Thomas à Kempis. His principal work Wahres Christenum (originally published from 1605 - 1610), i.e. True Christianity, has served as the foundation of many books of devotion, both Roman Catholic and Protestant. After Wahres Christentum, Arndt's best-known work is Paradiesgärtlein aller christlichen Tugenden, which was originally published in 1612 and translates in English to Garden of Paradise. Arndt was held in very high repute by the German Pietists. The founder of Pietism, Philipp Jakob Spener, repeatedly called attention to him and his writings, and even went so far as to compare him with Plato. In 2022, Johann Arndt was officially added to the Episcopal Church liturgical calendar. Attractive contents - plates present well. FORN-MSB-0324-0562-HK1303
