Giuseppe Marc'Antonio Baretti, 1719 - 1789, was an Italian-born English literary critic and author of two influential language-translation dictionaries. During his England years he was often known as Joseph Baretti. He was appointed Secretary to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, and became acquainted with Samuel Johnson, Garrick and others. CONDITION In full vellum bindings. Externally, soiled, as common with vellum though would clean with care. There is loss to most of the spine of volume two, and some lifting to volume one, with closed tears. The vellum to the joints have split. The hinges are just starting. Internally, firmly bound, with marginal browning and scattered foxing. There is an ink stamped for Hawkesyard Priory library to the front free-endpapers.
