First edition, rebound in half leather over marbled boards. Title and Eight gilt double bands to spine. . [1] viii, 136pp, [1]. Original endpapers are stained, front endpapers have name in pencil. Pages internally are clean and crisp with some ancient insect holes to the top. Silk page marker present William Lisle Bowles (1762-1850), Anglican clergyman and literary critic. Bowles' earlier works, many of which were in sonnet form, were much admired by the Lake Poets and Byron, who was later to take issue with Bowles 1806 critical edition of the works of Alexander Pope. This poem, The Missionary, is in eight cantos concerning tbe battle of Aramco in Chile & Capture of Spanish Governor Pedro de Valdivia by indigenous resistance leader Lautaro, in the 16th century.
