Description: An excellent large Matthew Boulton serving tray. It features Scottish Campbell clan family crests. This piece came out of a New England estate that had one of the largest silver collections I have ever seen. There was next to no Silverplate included in the collection. This was one of a couple exceptions. Matthew Boulton is considered one of Englands most important silversmiths so it makes good sense his work would be included in this collection. Based on the dealer sticker on the bottom it seems the former owners paid $650 for the tray. They left dealer price stickers on many of the things they owned. The dealer attributed the piece to circa 1790 which seems right. This is before electroplating became commonplace. The tray is made with the old Sheffield plate process which was much more labor intensive. It has an excellent old patina which is common for OSP pieces. It would look great with a good polishing but I decided to keep it as found. It features a good set of Boulton’s sun form hallmarks. My favorite part is the Campbell family crests. They feature a G monogram rather than a boar which is part of the traditional crest but otherwise the crests are true to form. There are two crests on the tray, one on either side. The words “Follow Me” are shown on the top of a buckled belt with the letter G in the middle of the belt. The Campbell Clan of Breadalbane Scotland were known as leaders in their region, hence the “Follow Me” slogan. The tray is in excellent condition with just light age appropriate wear. It is 19” long and 14” wide. It will ship ASAP!
