Description: Thank you for viewing our listings. This listing is for a great set of coins with incredible history from the Shipwreck of the El Cazador. The condition of these coins varies but would make great display pieces. This auction is for the following: A 1777 dated 2 Reales Bust Portrait series. The El Cazador set sail from Vera Cruz, Mexico for New Orleans on January 11, 1784. She was carrying thousands of silver coins to stimulate the Spanish holdings in the New World. After a month at sea, the El Cazador sank in the Gulf of Mexico (just 50 miles south of New Orleans), taking with it, the precious cargo and hundreds of lives. This was a disastrous blow for Spain. It could not produce enough silver coins to stabilize the economy in New Orleans. Sixteen years later, in 1800, Spain agreed to cede Louisiana back to France. Three short years later, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for 3 cents an acre. This purchase doubled the size of our nation. The history behind this coin is amazing and it would be a fantastic addition to a coin collection. The set pictured, is the exact set that you will receive. We will be listing more coins and currency over the next few weeks. Please be sure to check back often. This auction will be shipped via USPS First Class with Tracking and is limited to U.S. Residents. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.
