Description: I have here for sale a wonderfully illustrated set of three books entitled THE ROMAN HISTORY from the Building of Rome to the Ruin of the Commonwealth by N Hooke, Vols I-III. First edition published by G Hawkins, London between 1757 and 1764. Vol I published 1757, third edition; Vol II published 1756, second edition; Vol III published 1764, first edition. There was a fourth volume published but we do not have that volume for sale. There are a number of plates and maps in each volume - 9 plates and 4 maps in Vol I; 1 plate and 8 maps in Vol II; 1 plate and 4 maps in Vol III. Vol I covers Books I-III, Vol II covers Books IV to VI and Vol III covers Books VII-IX and finishes in the year AD 703. Bound in full brown leather hardboards with a gilt border. 5 raised bands and gilt motifs. Both boards on Vol I are detached. Some chips to the leather and some wear to the corners. Vol II has a detached front board and worn corners. Vol III has two detached boards. Internally the pages are clean on all three volumes. Vol I - xl + xliv + 634 pages + 55 page Capitoline Marbles or Consular Calendar; Vol II - xxxiii + xxviii + 560 pages + 52 pages continuation of Capitoline Marbles; Vol III - vi + 694 pages. 27 x 21 cm.
