As well as his architectural designs he is known for Vitruvius Britannicus, three volumes of high-quality engravings showing the great houses of the time. Henry or Hendrick Hulsbergh or Hulsberg (died 1729) was a Dutch engraver of maps and architecture who worked in London from at least 1709 onwards.. Vitruvius Britannicus is indispensable for the study of 17th and 18th-century architecture in England, and occupies its own place in architectural history as the book which established Palladian architecture as the approved style for Britain in the 18th century. Colen Campbell issued the first three volumes between 1715 and 1725. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Highmeadow estate was built up by the Hall family especially during the 16th and early 17th centuries. Highmeadow House was built by Henry Benedict Hall in 1672 and replaced the original house, which was shown on the 1608 map, to the east of the new house. The Hall family were extensive land and mine owners and Henry was High Sheriff of Gloucestershire under James II in 1687 and a patron of Newland Church from 1670 to 1679. Highmeadow House was sold in May 1805 for 1000 guineas, but evidently not without difficulty. The bad state of the house is first mentioned in May 1801 and it is evidently in the market in December 1802, but it is not until March 1804 that the fixtures are being sold by auction. The house was demolished in 1805 and little evidence of the house remains. Please explore my ebay shop for more antique prints. Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter
