You can buy mesquite seeds anywhere, so why should you buy them here? These seeds have been not only shelled from the bean and then shelled out of there pod, but also scored. Not many people are aware that this tiny seed has a hard outer surface. So hard in fact that it needs to be scored before planted, otherwise the surface of the seed is impenetrable to water. Through the process of scoring, which roughs up a small part of the seed, this will then allow the water to penetrate the surface of the seed and let the germination process begin. Germination is the process of when a seed sprouts, afterwards it is the called a seedling. Once the seedling continues to grow, afterwards it will be called a plant. I have had lots of hair pulling time to sort out the secrets of planting this special plant. This time, patience, and care that I have learned through this difficult journey, I have eliminated for you so that it is a somewhat walk in the park. All other seeds you see will not be prescored, but my love for happy customers, has drove me to go up, over, and beyond. As the saying goes, these seeds are ready to rock and roll. The internet has many different ways to plant the seeds. I would suggest that you plant them in soil not very deep, approximately 1/4 inch. This way once they sprout, they won't have a hard time to work their way to the surface. This should take approximately one week, but I have had early risers and late bloomers.... During this time, make sure the soil is just moist to where it is damp, but not soggy or have standing water. Once they sprout, make sure to continue to keep the soil damp. These first few weeks are precious time as the little ones start there journey. I have been neglectful for a day and they suffered greatly, some times dying from no water. When they sprout and peak there tiny heads, they will have two little leaves that look nothing like a mesquite leaf. Rest assured I did not send the wrong seed to you. The next set of leaves they grow will look more like the mesquite leaf. In the event, the seed is stuck to the leaf, let them be. You can do more harm than good in their fragile state. Trying to get the seed off the leaf could break the leaf off or even worse pop its little leaf head off. Sadly it has happened to me, and I seem to never learn:( So, your plant should start out in partial sun light. Fast forward: your plant has two leaves, has produced 2 more and is roughly 1-2 inches tall. As your new baby has taken its first steps, allow it to walk by letting it grow. It is always important to start the seeds in a small pot. Do not transplant it till it gets bigger. A key example is when you see its roots coming out of the drain wholes. It doesn't need to have a bunch, it will just let you know the plant has grown enough roots to get to the bottom. Once the plant gets around 4-6 inches tall, it may start to sway a little and a little is fine as this helps strengthen the trunk of the plant. Too much and the fragile thing can snap. If this happens and there is no leaves below the break, then the plant will most likely die. If the plant starts to grow like it's laying down on the job, then you might want to stake it as well. This can be done by putting a stick next to it in the soil and gently tie the plant to it. Once this plant grows bigger like a few feet, then it should be fine to plant in the ground. Just remember plants are more forgiving when they are older than younger. Also if you live in rabbit country, you will need to put something around it. I have used a plastic barrel i.e 5 gallon bucket with bottom cut out, or half of a 55 gallon drum. But if you don't protect your efforts, a rabbit will eat it down faster than it took you to plant it in the ground. Disclaimer: The seeds you will receive are similar to the first picture. The pictures are from the internet and are in no way trying to copyright. The other pictures are examples of what your tree could look like and an example of what it looks like in front of a house. Due to the difference in monitor colors, your seeds may look darker or lighter than the first seed picture shown. If I missed something, have any questions, please message me and I would love to answer you. Hope all this helps and have fun planting these special hand picked seeds just for you;)
