A small to medium tree to 12 ft.Leaves are large and deep purple with green veins. Underside of leaves are green. Fall color is scarlet.One of the best of the dark-purple toned Japanese Maples, with showy fruits and leaf veins. USDA Minimum Hardiness Zone : 5 Medicinal use : None known Edible parts of Japanese Maple: The sap contains a certain amount of sugar and can either be used as a drink, or can be concentrated into a syrup by boiling off the water. The syrup is used as a sweetener on many foods. Other uses of Japanese Maple: The leaves are packed around apples, rootcrops etc to help preserve them.
