It also contains a roster of 1,473 troops in the 13th South Carolina Infantry, with detailed Civil War service information on each soldier, including a transcription of his service record. The roster is alphabetical for easy use. This is an excellent addition to the book for those seeking genealogical details on the Civil War service of a member of this unit. The 13th South Carolina Infantry Regiment was organized in July 1861 at Lightwood Knot Springs, near Columbia, South Carolina. The regiment was ordered to the southern coast of South Carolina, near Pocotaglio, where it assisted in the defense of the coast there. The unit was present at the bombardment of Hilton Head by the Federal fleet. The men were ordered to evacuate their position. It was subsequently stationed near Green Pond, near the line of Colleton and Beaufort counties. At this time, the 13th South Carolina Infantry was formed into a brigade under the command of Brigadier General Maxey Gregg. It fought in Gregg’s and McGowan’s Brigade. The brigade remained on the coast of South Carolina until April of 1862 when it was ordered to Virginia. Its first camp in Virginia was Milford Station, near Richmond and Fredericksburg railroad. From here until the end of the war, the 13th would be attached to the Army of Northern Virginia. It participated in the Seven Days Battles, 2nd Bull Run, Chantilly, Antietam, Shepherdstown Ford, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Falling Waters, the Bristoe Campaign, the Mine Run Campaign, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Cold Harbor, the Siege of Petersburg, First Squirrel Level Road, Jones Farm, First Pegram's Farm, and Five Forks. The 13th South Carolina Infantry Regiment was present at the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. This is first edition book is brand new, unread, and in pristine condition.
