HOWARD, INC., LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA, 1988 OUT-OF-PRINT BOOK This wonderful, limited edition, First Edition book is signed and inscribed by the author. The book constitutes an excellent history of the 12th Virginia Cavalry, including a history of the command, detailed descriptions of battles and campaigns, a comprehensive unit roster, illustrations, maps and photographs. The book contains a unit roster with the Civil War service details on each individual soldiers in the unit. Nearly 1,500 hard-riding, sabre-slashing men from ten counties in the Shenandoah Valley served in the 12th Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War. Organized in the summer of 1862 from the acclaimed ranks of Turner Ashby’s Cavalry, soldiers of the 12th subsequently fought in over 100 skirmishes and battles during the next three years. Perhaps the regiment’s greatest achievement occurred at the Battle of Brandy Station on June 9, 1863. As a Union flanking movement threatened to destroy J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry corps, a bold and reckless charge by the 12th Virginia helped thwart the Yankee attempt, thus securing the key position for the Confederates. Other notable 12th Cavalry actions included the capture of Union railroad trains in the Shenandoah Valley; adventurous missions deep into West Virginia in 1863 and 1864; assisting with the capture and roundup of over 2,000 cattle far behind Union lines in the famous “Beefsteak Raid”; and participating in the last charge at Appomattox only two hours before General Lee’s surrender. Sharpen your sabre, saddle up, and spur your steed to a gallop? Are you read to charge into history with the 12th?
