Also known as Bitter Pecan, Swamp Hickory . Synonyms: Hicoria aquatica, Juglans aquatica Medium to large tree with a long, clear trunk, buttressed base and narrow, irregular crown. Leaves alternate, feather-compound, 9-15 inches long, with 7-15 leaflets; leaflets lance- to egg-shaped, curved, 2-5 inches long, with long-pointed tip; margins finely to inconspicuously toothed. Upper surface dark, smooth; lower surface hairy, especially along veins and stalk. Yellow in fall. Bark gray-brown, often red-tinged, splitting into long, loose, plate like shaggy scales, brittle Fruits September-October, pear- to egg-shaped nuts, often clustered, 1-1½ inches long, 1 inch wide, noticeably flattened compared to other hickory nuts, with a thin, 4-winged husk having bright yellow scales, splitting at the base. Nuts flat, reddish, bitter. Size: Height: to 100 feet. Hardiness: USDA Zone 8a: to -12.2 °C (10 °F) to Zone to 11: above 4.5 °C (40 °F) Medicinal use : None known Edible parts of Water Hickory: Seed - raw or cooked. Astringent. The seed is up to 35 mm long, it is produced in clusters of 3 - 4 and has a thin shell, but the kernel is very bitter. The seed ripens in late autumn and, when stored in its shell in a cool place, will keep for at least 6 months. Other uses of Water Hickory: Wood - heavy and close grained but soft and brittle, which limits its use. It weighs 46 lb per cubic foot and is used mainly in fencing and as a fuel, where it yields considerably more heat than most woods.
