Description: Test Iran Winter Squash (Cucurbita maxima) Check out our other listings! Iran Winter Squash is an heirloom variety collected from northeastern Iran in the 1940s for preservation in the USDA seed bank. It was introduced to the American public a number of years later and has been quite the hit due to its stunning appearance! Long, creeping vines produce large, pumpkin-like fruits with an exterior that is silver-green and mottled in pale orange, making it excellent for fall displays and bringing a bit of autumn into your home or business. Flesh is orange and tasty, and can be prepared in the same fashion as other winter squashes, be it baking, sauteing, frying, or pureeing! Drought in heat tolerant, and if stored in a cool, dark location the fruits will keep for well over a year. 110 days to maturity. Squash Germination Guide Direct sow. Squash do best when planted directly in the ground. They are also tender plants that are very sensitive to the cold, so be sure to wait until soil temperatures have warmed to 70°F or greater. Select a planting site. Squash need a lot of space for their sprawling vines, about 50 to 100 square feet per hill. If space is limited, plant the seedlings at the edge of your garden and direct vine growth across your lawn or sidewalk. Prepare the planting site. Squash are greedy feeders that require nutrient rich soil that is well-drained. To satisfy their hunger, mix aged manure and/or compost into the soil prior to planting. Sow seeds in rows or on small mounds known as 'hills". Hills are best as the soil tends to warm more rapidly, helping to speed up germination. This also helps with water drainage and pest control. If using hills, plant the seeds 1 inch deep into the hills, 4 to 5 seeds per hill in hills that are 4 to 8 feet apart. When the plants grow to about 2 or 3 inches in height, you can thin to 2 to 3 plants per hill by carefully snipping off the weaker, unwanted plants while taking care not to disturb the roots of the remaining ones. If using rows, sow seeds 6 to 12 inches apart in rows that are 6 to 10 feet apart. When the plants grow to about 2 to 3 inches in height, you can thin the weaker plants so you are left with one plant every 18 to 36 inches. Water often during germination. Be sure to keep the soil moist but not oversaturated. Seedlings should emerge in about 5 to 10 days if soil temperatures remain consistently warm.
