Description: Requested by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Post Office Department opened a competition in 1937 for designing a new series of stamps honoring past presidents which was named "the Presidential Series". Artist, Elaine Rawlinson from New York won the contest basing the images for the Presidential Series on bust format. From a silhouette style, the ten cent stamp depicting John Tyler is inspired by a bust displayed in the Rotunda of the Virginia State Capitol, it is also the first depiction of Tyler on a stamp. This series was used for over eighteen years.
